Designing with the Underserved: An Exploration of the Complexities of Design in South Africa from the perspective of the SDGs.

Angus Donald Campbell, Head of Department & Senior Lecturer, Department of Industrial Design, University of Johannesburg (UJ)

With reference to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this Studia Generalia lecture by Angus Donald Campbell will explore some of the complexities faced by designers attempting to design with the underserved in South Africa —  one of the most unequal societies in the world. In the lecture, Campbell will take a traditionally African narrative and visually rich approach to unpack his practical design experience within the complex social, cultural, economic, political and environmental contexts of  Southern Africa through his and his students’ attempts to positively impact various SDGs. The lecture will be ±45 minutes, with a 15 minute Q&A afterwards.

Angus Donald Campbell is the Head of Department and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. He is currently completing his PhD in Development Studies, is a qualified Industrial Designer with a Master’s degree and almost 20 years of university lecturing, practice-based research and freelance design experience. Most of his work is passionately focused on local and sustainable innovation at the complex nexus of social, technological and ecological systems. Workshop after the lecture at 16:20–18:00

Designing with the Underserved: How to Design within Complex Socio-Technical Systems towards the SDGs (workshop, max 20 people)

This workshop by Angus Donald Campbell will explore a theoretical framework that combines Activity Theory (Psychology, Education Development & HCI) and the Capabilities Approach (Human Development) in order to help service designers practically explore complex contextual systems in high fidelity. Such an approach helps to identify appropriate opportunities for design amplification or intervention towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) whilst accommodating the diversity of embedded human experience.

The event will be held remotely via Zoom.
